Abstract

Arthur Miller is considered a playwright who played a decisive role in transforming American play into today’s modern play, and Death of A Salesman (1949) is a representative work. Although Koreans could not see American performances, Willy’s image became permanent in Korea by the performances of Frederick March and Dustin Hofffman who played the main character in the 1951 and 1985 films, respectively. In Korea, Death of a Salesman has been actively performed since the premiere in 1953. In addition, the play was translated in Korean by English scholar, Oh Hwa-seop in 1956, revised in 1976, and published up until the 2009 edition. Currently, Kang Yu-na’s 2009 Korean tranlsation of the play is included in Minumsa’s collection of world literature and is being sold. Death of a Salesman which was introduced to Korea in the early postwar period, was recognized as a representative drama dealing with salesman, as the title recalls. However, in the 1950s, when Korea was mainly an agricultural country, except in the case of international trade, the term foreign salesperson was more familiar than salesman, so some Korean readers may feel a cultural distance. Nevertheless, since Willy, a poor office worker, was fired, he was also understood as a type of person who symbolized “petite bourgeoisie” in Korea. In particular, in the late 1990s, the IMF crisis and mass unemployment sparked interest in this work. The contrast of individuals dying and the “Frustration of the American Dream of Americans” are suggestive at a time when the United States is revival after the war. America is a nation of immigrants, and many immigrants, including Korean Americans, dream of the American Dream. This fact, in that Arthur Miller’s play explores the frustrations of Americans’ American Dream, prompts readers to reflect on the dark side of America.
