Abstract
Siddhārtha Gautama went through a period of six years of asceticism before he became Buddha, attaining enlightenment and becoming a Buddha. In Buddhist scriptures, the extreme weakness of Siddhārtha’s body during his six-year fasting asceticism is vividly described. This is also clearly shown in the relics of ancient ascetic statues. However, Siddhārtha decided to stop his fast and eat food. The story of the first food he ate is the narrative of Sujātā’s milk porridge offering. After Siddhārtha, who had been observing silence and fasting as a śramaṇa, recovered his strength and attained enlightenment on the Vajra Seat under the Bodhi Tree, it took only one day. However, through comparative studies of various sources, it was analyzed that numerous narratives are interwoven within it. And the focus was on the pedestal of the Buddha statue at the Mahābodhi Mahāvihāra. The iconography of Sujātā, who is sitting with a bowl full of food in her left hand and a food mudrā in her right hand toward the statue of the Buddha of Touching the Earth, was explained in detail. Sujātā’s offering of milk porridge can be compared to the first offering of sugarcane juice that the first Tīrthaṃkara Ṛṣabha in Jainism received after his 400 days fast. Just as Jainism still honors Ṛṣabha by eating sugarcane juice, it is believed that milk porridge should be developed into a ritual food to commemorate the day of the attainment of Buddha’s Bodhi, and the pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya should be based on the Sujātā Stūpa.
