Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze pre-service elementary teachers’ perceptions of English teaching by examining the feedback they provided while observing their peers' English microteaching. To this end, 20 pre-service teachers individually conducted microteaching lasting about 12 minutes. Their peers then provided feedback on these lessons based on evaluation criteria and domains developed by the researcher. A single piece of feedback was selected for each microteaching, resulting in a total of 20 feedback records, which were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative analysis revealed that feedback was disproportionately focused on core instructional activities, such as teaching-learning processes, while aspects like the teacher’s attitude and the flow of the lesson were significantly underrepresented. This finding suggests the necessity for pre-service teachers to adopt a more balanced perspective on English instruction. The qualitative analysis indicated that pre-service teachers generally demonstrated proper and desirable understanding across all evaluation criteria. This awareness is expected to support their future planning and execution of effective English lessons. However, some evaluation criteria were mentioned by only a small number of participants, making it difficult to generalize these perceptions. This underscores the need for explicit training through teacher education programs. Such training could include methods like watching lesson videos and systematically addressing a broader range of observation items. Based on these findings, the study provides recommendations for future research and suggests strategies to enhance pre-service teachers’ perceptions of effective English teaching.
