Abstract
This study examined the effect of a community playground-linked Living Lab on preservice early childhood teachers’ multicultural education competencies. The participants were 35 students enrolled inthe advanced course of a three-year early childhood education program at a university in the G region, who took a six-credit multicultural education course during the first semester of 2024. To analyze the effects, pre-and post-tests were conducted using scales measuring multicultural education understanding, attitudes, and teaching efficacy, along with qualitative analyses of class journals, individual interviews, and activity outcome reports. The research findings revealed statistically significant improvements across all domains of multicultural education understanding, attitudes, and teaching efficacy. The qualitative analyses further showed the following: First, in multicultural education understanding, notable changes were observed in understanding the purpose of multicultural education, target concepts, implementation methods, and teaching approaches. Second, in multicultural education attitudes, positive changes were observed in multicultural environment awareness, recognition of the necessity of multicultural education, and understanding of teacher roles. Third, in multicultural teaching efficacy, improvements were noted in situational coping skills, design and operational capabilities, and interaction and competency development skills. In particular, the field-oriented nature of the Living Lab, its community linkages, and cyclical feedback structures played crucial roles in fostering these changes. These findings suggest that participation in community-based Living Labs within teacher preparation programs can serve as an effective teaching and learning model for practically enhancing multicultural education competencies.
