Abstract
This paper examined Cho Hee-ryong(趙熙龍, 1789-1866)’s perspective on the specificity of ‘entering into poems from paintings(由畵入詩)’ through his writings on a painting. He wrote the first books of the painting theory from a new perspective as a middle-class literati painter(閭巷文人畵家). In the late Joseon Dynasty the modern perception on paintings began to germinate voluntarily, whereupon Cho Hee-ryong showed some aesthetical concepts which were different from the traditional literati painting theory. He opined that painters had to enter into poems from paintings. Usually, the literati maintained that literati painters had to enter into paintings from poems(以詩入畵) because <paintings depicting poems(詩意圖)> connoted literary value which was indispensable. Joseon literati considered ‘entering into paintings from poems’ important, which was recognized as important in Chinese literati painting theory. Especially, after ‘the theory on the same rule of poems and paintings(詩畵一律論)’ of Chinese literati painting theory was introduced in the Goryeo Dynasty, the literati culture, which depicted poems, began in earnest. Furthermore, the literati consistently paint <paintings depicting poems> during the whole Joseon Dynasty. However, Cho Hee-ryong particularly emphasized that ‘entering into poems from paintings’ connected with separate artistic value and painters’ will of creation. He, also, emphasized that from-paintings means from-inner self(由畵卽自吾). The concept of ‘from-inner self(自吾)’ indicated creativity and artistic spirit from an inkstone in the mind(胸中之硯). Thus, ‘entering into poems from paintings’ was one of distinctive aesthetical concepts that he maintained in his art theory.
