가톨릭이 사제의 구원사역과 일반 직업을 구분하면서 두 영역의 간의 성스러움에 차별이 있다고 본 것과 달리 종교개혁가들은 사제들의 사역과 일반인들의직업 간에 구분을 두지 않고 교회의 일과 세속에서의 일 모두가 하나님의 구원의 과정에 동참하는 것이라고 보았다. 루터는 모든 사람은 동등하게 성스럽다는만인제사장론을 통해 일반인들의 직업도 신으로부터 부여받은 소명이라고 주장하며 일상인의 삶에 종교적 색채를 더하였다. 작품 『작은아씨들』 전반에 깔려있는 근면성실함에 대한 강조, 영혼에 덕이 되는 직업에 대한 열망은 개신교의직업소명론과 궤를 같이한다. 노동을 통해 성경의 중심원리인 신과 이웃에 대한사랑을 실천하고자 노력하는 등장인물들의 삶은 종교개혁가들의 소명으로서의직업의 구체적 양상을 잘 드러낸다.
Abstract
During the Medieval Period, Catholicism distinguished between the priest's duty from ordinary occupation, and it regarded that there is a difference in the sanctity between the two areas. Religious reformers saw that both church work and secular work, without distinction between priests' private affairs and ordinary people's jobs, were involved in the process of God's salvation. Luther argued that everyone is equally holy. He added religious color to the profession of the common people, claiming that what they do is a calling from God. In Little Women, the emphasis on diligence, desire for a soul-benefiting career is in line with Protestantism's view of job. The characters in the novel who try to practice the Bible's central principle, their love for God and their neighbors in their work, reveal the aspects of their profession as a calling claimed by religious reformers.
