Abstract

This study examines the tensions between delayed speech and the social norm of immediacy experienced by a researcher with a speech disability, using a phenomenological autoethnographic approach. While prior studies often framed slow or delayed speech as a functional deficit or a limitation of assistive technologies, this research analyzes how delayed speech is relationally and temporally shaped within everyday and academic interactions. Ninety longitudinal self-recorded materials—including daily journals, research logs, interaction memos, and class/presentation notes collected between 2020 and 2025—were analyzed through Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological method. Findings reveal three themes. First, delayed speech led to lost speaking opportunities, interpretive dominance by conversational partners, and technology-centered evaluations within immediacy norms. Second, delayed interaction generated relational possibilities such as waiting, mutual adjustment of conversational pace, and the emergence of rhythms that fostered deeper understanding. Third, these experiences shaped the researcher’s academic identity and agency, revealing ableist structures embedded in speed-oriented academic cultures. By reframing slow speech not as a deficit but as a relational and temporal practice, this study expands frameworks for understanding communicative rights and academic participation among people with speech disabilities. Implications include cultivating time-inclusive academic and practice environments and establishing institutional support for knowledge production by scholars with communication differences.
