Revisiting Anouilh’s Antigone and resituating it against the backdrop of philosophical discourses on the Antigone story, this paper aims to read the play’s three significant transformations from Sophocles’s play through Derrida’s deconstruction of Hegel’s dialectical idealism in his reading of Antigone in Phenomenology of Spirit (1807) and Lacan’s idealization of Antigone as a pure signifier that strengthens and perpetuates the family Atè in The Ethics of Psychoanalysis (1959-60). First, comparing Anouilh’s play with Sophocles’s play and Heaney’s version in terms of their translations and transformation of human law and divine law, I explore how Anouilh’s erasure or minimization of the binary between these two concepts reverberate with Derrida’s critique of hierarchical binaries in Hegel’s dialectics. The second and third transformations in Anouilh’s play are the arbitrary relationship between the two corpses (signifiers) and their identities (signifieds) and the metatheatrical and game-play images. Using Derrida’s notion of différance as a theoretical lens, I explore how the unfixed and ambiguous images of Antigone surrounding these transformations in Anouilh’s play correspond to Derrida’s deconstruction of the fixating idealization of Antigone in Hegel’s hierarchical binary between human law and divine law and Lacan’s idealization of Antigone as a pure signifier.
