Abstract

This study examines Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 through the three interrelated concepts of life, technology, and space, with particular attention to the director's cinematic imagination surrounding the production of biocapital in technologically mediated spaces. Drawing upon posthumanist discourse, the analysis explores how the alliance between scientific technology and humanism contributes to the exploitation of vulnerable life forms under capitalist systems. Bong appropriates the conventions of Hollywood science fiction to construct two contrasting spatial domains-the spaceship Drakkar and the planet Niflheim. While Drakkar embodies the deathly ecosystem of technological rationality and bureaucratic humanism, Niflheim functions as a living environment that resists such domination. Through the figure of Mickey, a hybrid being situated between human and animal, Bong exposes and critiques the violence and exploitation intrinsic to the humanist management of life. The technological ecosystem of Drakkar operates through Mickey's bodily exploitation, symbolizing the oppressive hierarchy that privileges “humanity” as a superior species. Meanwhile, the creatures of Niflheim join Mickey in revealing the violence of humanism and in envisioning a posthuman community grounded in interconnectivity and multispecies subjectivity. Ultimately, the film reconfigures the boundaries between life and technology, proposing an ethical reimagination of coexistence in the age of artificial ecologies and capital.
