Abstract
Various wound evidence encountered at crime scenes is recorded through manual measurements and photography by coroners and forensic investigators. However, the process of storing 3D lesion information in 2D photographs can lead to distortions, making re-measurement and analysis impossible, thus highlighting the need for site documentation using 3D modeling technology. Recently, advancements in mobile 3D modeling technology have enabled anyone with a smartphone to use a 3D scanner easily, quickly, and affordably. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using mobile 3D technology incorporating photogrammetry in small and narrow areas by comparing the 3D reconstruction and individual measurements of five block models with narrow grooves made from clay and 30 lesion models made from porcine skin and porcine bones. Additionally, the study sought to validate the appropriateness of using mobile 3D modeling technology for precisely documenting various lesions at crime scenes.
