Abstract

Since the launch of the government in 2017, there has been a growing interest in the role of the Committee for the five Northern Korean Provinces in the face of changes in the external environment surrounding the Korean Peninsula, such as holding inter-Korean and North American summits. However, the proportion of people who recognize the existence and function of this institution is not high. Seventy years after the establishment of the institution (1949-2019), have past, but the understanding of the role of the organization is not high for the people. Negative reports by the domestic and foreign media about the Committee have increased, and the National Assembly has been raising amendments to related laws on function adjustment. As the external challenges, such as changes in inter-Korean relations, the aging of the first generation of displaced people, the increase in North Korean defectors, and the rise of political and media negative views have increased, the diagnosis of the overall status of the activities shall be necessary. In addition, it is urgent to search for concrete measures to respond to changes in the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
