사르트르와 푸코는 인간과 역사를 보는 관점에 있어서는 대립적인 위치에 있다. 특히 1960년대 후반부 그들의 활동에서 이러한 대립은 자주 확인된다. 푸코는 “인간의 죽음”을 선언하고, 안티휴머니즘의 입장을 공공연히 드러낸 반면, 사르트르는본인을 실존주의적 휴머니스트로 소개한다. 그러나 이러한 표면적 대립 아래에는 공통점이 있다. 푸코가 말하는 “인간의 죽음”은 인간을 진리의 기원으로 가정하는 근대적 에피스테메의 종말에 대한 목격담이었다. 나아가 푸코는 인간에게 특정한 주체의 양식을 적용하려는 시도를 계보학적으로 분석하고 이에 대한 대안을 제시하는 시도를 한다. 사르트르는 실존주의는휴머니즘이다에서 르네상스적 휴머니즘에 대한 통렬한 비판을 하는데, 비판의 주된 핵심은 휴머니즘이 인간의 어떤 본질을 가정하고 있다는 것이다. 또한 그는 인간이 자신을 초월해 있는 가치에 복종하는 것은 불가능하며, 인간은 스스로를 초월할 수 있을 뿐임을 역설하며 실존주의적 휴머니즘을 천명했다. 이러한 주장은각자의 철학적 체계에 따라 각자의 용어로 기술되었지만, 보다 거시적인 현대철학의 맥락에서 보면, 상통하는 내용으로 보인다. 뿐만 아니라 전통적 휴머니즘을 거부하고 항구적으로 창조되는 주체성을 주장한다는 점에서 사르트르와 푸코의 논의는 포스트휴머니즘 담론과도 일맥상통하는 지점이 있다.
Abstract
In this article, I try to show that Sartre and Foucault meet a crossroad of humanism despite differences between their philosophical stance. “The death of human being” in Foucault means that the modern episteme assumes the human being as the origin of the truth is over. Then Foucault analysed historical forms of subjectivation by genealogy and suggested alternatives also. Sartre criticized traditional humanism which assumed the essence or nature of the human being. He argued that the human being could not obey to the transcendental values but transcend only himself/herself. Nonetheless their arguments was described with different terms in according to each philosophical position, in macroscopic and contemporary view, their arguments ― definition of the human being, criticism of traditional humanism, incessant creation of the self, etc ― meet a crossroad of humanism and posthumanism.
