Abstract

This study analyzes Human Fuga based on embodied cognition theory and neuroscience to explore the audience’s bodily experiences and the embodied empathy. It examines how the kinesthetic empathy mediated by the body and higher-level cognitive processes involving language and narrative shape the audience’s experience. Initially, we analyze the body, movement, and sound of the performance, which lead to the audience's immediate and involuntary bodily experience grounded in our body’s mechanisms. Subsequently, Human Fuga is analyzed at the intersection of body, language, and narrative, identifying that language and narrative strategies enhance and stimulate the audience's bodily experience. This discussion leads to the conclusion that bodily experience is foundational to empathy and that Human Fuga's strategies augmenting kinesthetic empathy with intellectual understanding mediated by narrative can effectively achieve embodied empathy. This article, integrating cognitive theory, can be appropriately utilized in analyzing body-centered performances and provides a new perspective in discussing the aesthetic experience of the audience.
