Abstract
The borderline between Bukbu and Seobu, among the five administrative districts(五部) of Hanseongbu during the Joseon Dynasty period were maintained from the early years of the dynasty to the Korean Empire period. It passes along the street extending westward from the point slightly north of Seosipjagak(西十字閣), a watchtower on the west side of Gyeongbokgung Palace), reaches the vicinity of Bunseongonggam(分繕工監), goes up north, and heads west to Pilundae(弼雲臺). Though this borderline was not changed, a measure to change the administrative districts that had been started during the Gabo Reform affected these areas. Investigations on the land and family registers implemented during the Korean Empire period showed the border and range of dong as natural village in more detail. The result of land investigation project identified during the Korean Empire period was used as the Japanese had intended in the Japanese colonial period. "Dong(洞)" was originally the name of natural village, not administrative district. However, after the administrative district reorganization, this natural village was divided into two or three "sections, and they belonged to different administrative "dongs," respectively. What intensified this confusion was 『Kyungsungbusa』 published during the Japanese colonial period. 『Kyungsungbusa』 was cited to help understanding the relations of bu (seo)-bang-gye and dong. However, it stated the natural village "dong" as a sub-administrative district of gye to consider it as an administrative district, resulting in regarding the village “dong” and administrative district “dong” changed in 1914 as the same. Following this, later studies have had misconception about it without finding the error. After Jeong・Dong Reform was implemented in 1914, the natural "dong" was divided, being part of other administratively-created dongs respectively or dismantled. The six dongs of the Bukbu-Seobu junctions formed during this period-Tongui-dong, Chebu-dong, Nuha-dong, Jeokseon-dong, Naeja- dong, Pirun-dong-also included such a problem. It has continued to this day, and the names and borders remain as administratively legal districts. Paying attention to the changes in adjacent administrative districts of the "borderline between Bukbu and Seobu" is not simply to identify the flow of administrative system. Identification of the borderline between Bukbu and Seobu could be a starting point for verifying the difference between the northern and southern regions of the border, the western section of the north, also called “Seochon(西村, West Village) today, and the old western section of the south, and each area’s identity.
