초록

This paper examines the stylistics of English and Hausa through the use of Animal Farm (AF) and Gandun Dabbobi (GD). The former is the English SL text and the latter is the Hausa RL text translation. The study is based on the theoretical framework of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1995). However, the study limits itself to only the seven basic translation procedures. These are literal, calque, loan/borrowing, transposition, modulation, adaptation and equivalence. The result of this study reveals the predilections of the two languages and serves as a guide to translators especially those involved in working with English and Hausa. This is seen in the choices made by the translator. Such choices by the translator are either compulsory or optional. When they are compulsory the translator has no option but to make changes from the SL text in the RL. Whereas in the case of optional types the translator is expected to either make some changes or maintain the same style as that of the SL text.

Abstract

This paper examines the stylistics of English and Hausa through the use of Animal Farm (AF) and Gandun Dabbobi (GD). The former is the English SL text and the latter is the Hausa RL text translation. The study is based on the theoretical framework of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958/1995). However, the study limits itself to only the seven basic translation procedures.
