Abstract
The research examines the changes and characteristics of irrigation facilities in South Pyongan Province from the 18th century to the begin ning of the 20th century. The characteristic of zeon in South Pyongan Province is that it was constructed with the purpose of cultivating mili tary farms(屯田) in the lower reaches of the Daedong River and coastal areas. Consequently, it needed large-scale waterproofing and protection against tides, so it was larger in size compared to other regions. As for bo, an increase can be confirmed around 1910 in the eastern region of South Pyongan Province, including Seongcheon. The conversion of irri gation activities centered on zeon to the construction of small-scale bo utilizing tributaries of rivers can also be found in other regions, and South Pyongan Province exhibits a similar pattern. South Pyongan Province had the smallest proportion of irrigated pad dies among all cultivated fields until the 1920s. This is because it was difficult to secure stable irrigation water due to low average annual rainfall and because water sowing-oriented farming methods were used. Also, until the end of the 1920s, the individual irrigation area of the irri gation facilities was the smallest in the country, which was due to the fact that the location of the irrigation facilities was mostly in basins uti lizing tributaries of rivers, making it difficult to irrigate large areas.
