Abstract

All human has the right to take healthy foods. However, there are so many people who cannot have it in the areas called as food deserts or food swamps. They are classified into the social weak including the handicapped, the old and the underclasses. The locational characteristics in food deserts are constructed and differentiated by social and economic situation of nations and regions. The food deserts of the U.S.A., and Australia that have a huge land are usually created in the urban periphery and rural area. In contrast, those of the U. K., Japan, and Korea that have a small land are created in the zone in transition of urban core surroundings or the deprived area of urban periphery. Poverty, declined built environment, and aging are major components of food deserts creation. Seoul has a big potential for a new type of food deserts to be created due to high population density and overwhelming apartment based residential environment in contrast with the case of overseas. This study investigates the potential of food deserts in Seoul and looks into the residents’ fresh food consumption behaviors as two cases of Namyoung-dong categorized as a zone in transition and Deungchon-3 dong categorized as a residential area in the terms of the urban spatial structure of Seoul.
