Abstract

A Study on the epic 'Manas' of the Former Soviet Central Russia Yang, Min-Jong This article has the introductory characteristics of the further study on the heroic epic 'Manas' of Kyrgyzstan. Most of the materials which the author uses are the works of the soviet scholars written in russian language. In the beginning, the author tries to point out the origin and narrated time of the 'Manas'. Then, the author shortly surveys the procedure of recording activities of the oral-transmitted-texts of the epic and the variety of the recorded versions. Finally, the contents of the 'Manas' are selectively introduced to present the narrative patterns and structure of the texts of 'Manas'. In this article we may find the uniqueness and value of the epic 'Manas' not only in terms of the aspects of the pure legacies of oral-transmitted- literature but with the purpose of the implementation of the vivid area study on the history, politics, folklore and philosophy of the Kyrgyz and other central asian peoples. As the study on 'Manas' continues, the author also hopes to find some valuable keys to understand the whole nature of the rich oral literary tradition of the peoples of the ALTAI.
