Abstract

Worship of Sea Deities in Balhae Yun Jae-Woon (Research Fellow, Koguryo Research Foundation) Balhae interchanged cultural and economical exchange between Tang and Japan by sea. Therefore like other countries in those days, Balhae have the possibility of Worship of Sea Deities. Worship of Sea Deities in Balhae is based on Cheonmoonsaeng() of a diplomatic mission. I should consider that the Belief of Balhae is related to the Worship of Sea Deities as follows: prevalence of religious beliefs of Gwanum() and religious beliefs of Buphwa() in Segyung() and Donggyung(), case of taoism according to Yi Gwang-Hyun(), shamanism. According to position of temple in Kraskino fortress, earthen horse and historic site of rite in Hukura Port(), Balhae have the possibility of performance of rite of the State related sea.
