초록

This study is not only to examine George Orwell’s views on imperialism, the resulting pessimism, and, if any, gleams of hope in Burmese Days, but to find how the feeling of failure in this work is connected with Orwell. This work is based on his experiences in Burma as an Indian Imperial Police which shape his political perspective. John Flory is a white English man with hideous birthmark on his face, stationed in upper Burma, Kyauktada. He is an outsider from the English Club, which symbolizes imperialism where the natives as well as the masters have no liberty, and from the Burmese society. Flory’s feelings of failure and alienation from the society are associated with the days when Orwell was in the private prep school. Eventually, spurned by a white girl, another imperial mind, Flory takes his own life. Therefore, this work must be valued as the prologue to later Orwell’s most accomplished works such as Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty Four opposed to autocracies, and it could also suggest a fraction of hope in the light of a sense of guilt for Burmese and the protagonist’s strong will to escape from the old self and society through suicidal death.
