Abstract

This study examines the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta of the Pali Canon and the Nianchu Jing of the Chinese Buddhist Canon, comparing how Buddhist meditation practices were reconstructed in accordance with the cultural and philosophical contexts of India and China during the transmission of Buddhism. The Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta, rooted in the Pali tradition, emphasizes an experiential and analytical approach, focusing on meticulous observation of the body and mind to gain insight into impermanence, suffering, and non-self. In contrast, the Nianchu Jing, influenced by Confucian and Daoist thought, employs natural and symbolic metaphors to guide practitioners toward an intuitive understanding of the essence of meditation. This research analyzes the structural and content differences of the four foundations of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna) in the two texts. The Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta comprises 44 sections, structured systematically to encourage detailed and deconstructive observation of phenomena. On the other hand, the Nianchu Jing expands its content to 62 sections, with a particular focus on enriching the foundations of mindfulness on the body (kāyānupassanā). Using metaphors such as the lotus flower, flowing springs, and a fully covering garment, it frames meditation as a process of achieving harmony with nature and realizing ethical ideals, reflecting Chinese cultural emphasis on natural and moral harmony. This study argues that these differences are not merely linguistic but represent the influence of the distinct philosophical traditions and cultural frameworks of India and China on Buddhist meditation practices. While the Pali tradition highlights experiential and analytical methods to facilitate individual enlightenment, the Chinese tradition incorporates symbolic and ethical dimensions, emphasizing social harmony and inner peace. By examining these differences, this study sheds light on how Buddhism was adapted, transformed, and enriched through its interaction with local cultural traditions, demonstrating both the universality and adaptability of Buddhist practices.
