This paper discusses the function of SHALL in the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits 1993 Revision (UCP-500) through the following three steps: (1) a sketch of present-day treatments of SHALL, (2) the usage of SHALL in UCP-500 partly in comparison with that of UCP-400. the Uniform Customs and Practice for Documentary Credits 1983 Revision: and (3) a discussion of the essential meaning of SHALL and a suggestion of the usage of SHALL, particularly in the next UCPs to come, and other contemporary legal documents.
