Abstract
Rembrandt’s Christ’s Passion series is the central theme of a Catholic altarpiece that is unusual for Protestant countries such as the Netherlands. This paper examines how Catholic church rituals allowed under Dutch tolerance policy are represented in the works of Protestant states, and how Catholics and Protestants are converging and colliding in works of art as they encounter and collide in the border space. This paper also examines the difference between Rembrandt’s Passion series and Catholic altarpieces in terms of their styles. I suggest Rembrandt’s Passion series as an evidence of Protestant meditation originating in English occasional meditation. To this end, I will also examine the difference between Protestant meditation and Catholic meditation and explore the characteristics of Protestant meditation poetry.
