Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the difference between the play behaviors of 4 or 5 year-old children on the basis of age and sex, and the relationship between their play behavior, perceived competence, and social acceptance. For this purpose, we have conducted a survey of perceived competence and social acceptance on 48 four-year-olds and 56 five-year-olds in 4 childcare centers located in Seoul. Furthermore, we've posed a questionnaire of children's play behaviors to their 9 class teachers. The results of the study are as follows: First, the result of the survey for children's play behaviors on the basis of age showed little difference between four-year-olds and five-year-olds. Second, there was a difference in children’s play behavior based on their gender. It was revealed that boys tended to behave more roughly than girls. Third, the survey of the relationship between children's play behavior, perceived competence, and social acceptance resulted in showing that boy's social play has affirmative relation with cognitive perceived competence and that girl's solitary-passive play has affirmative relation with cognitive perceived competence and peer-group acceptance.
