Abstract
This study underwent with 89 college students utilized the concept mapping method to explore their perfectionistic self-presentational endeavors as well as their coping strategies when such endeavors are discouraged. A total of 7 high perfectionistic self-presentation students (high PSP) and 7 low perfectionistic self-presentation students (low PSP) drawn from the 89 students based on their scores on the Korean version of the Perfectionistic Self-Presentation Scale were interviewed. Consequently, key sentences were extracted from the researcher and were sorted and rated by students themselves. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis were conducted to identify the concept map of their subjective experiences. The results indicated that high PSP tried not to make mistakes in public, to manage their appearances, and to concern about getting along well with others. On the other hand, low PSP reported having no need to look perfect to others, and they focused more on internal growth while incorporating mistakes as a device for further development. Regarding coping strategies when perfectionistic self-presentational endeavors are discouraged, high PSP tends to ruminate over a mistake and its consequences. This group of people also seem to take little things as mistakes. However, low PSP accepted their mistakes, and encouraged themselves toward better performances in the future. This study is expected to give a broader and in-depth understanding of college students who suffer from interpersonal relationship difficulties due to their ineffective perfectionistic self-presentational endeavors and coping strategies.
