Abstract
This study documents the influence of CEOs with negative personality traits on corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance and demonstrates the mediating effect of dynamic capabilities. It aims to analyze CEO personality traits (especially negative traits) through a focus on companies’ CSR activity performance and dynamic capacities. We argue that negative CEO traits ultimately influence CSR activities by means of the mediating effect of dynamic capabilities. The results show that CEO machiavellianism and psychopathy negatively affect CSR performance, and that there is a complete mediating effect by the company’s dynamic capabilities on CSR activities in relation to the environment and society. On the other hand, there are partial effects on the CSR activities of members of the organization. Despite the perception that individual-level variables such as a CEO’s personality and characteristics are the most critical factors to be considered in a company’s business strategy, studies on how CEOs’ psychological characteristics affect CSR performance have been somewhat lacking. A CEO’s personality traits affect their company’s economic and financial management performance amidst a rapidly changing environment and in the face of pressure from internal and external stakeholders. Therefore, various in-depth studies on CEO personality traits are critical, so that companies can in future secure competitive advantage and enhance value creation through their corporate social responsibility performance.
