Abstract

In 1595, Hu Dashou(胡大受), one of training officers of Ming army(練兵敎師), was dispatched to Joseon. He was from Yiwu(義烏), Zhejiang(浙江) province. His mission was to train musqueteers, archers, and infantries of Joseon army. But the officers including Hu committed a variety of fraud, violations, extortions, etc. As Hu arrived at Seoul and met with Seonjo(宣祖), the King of Joseon, Hu began to search for silver mines in Korea peninsula and tried to develop them. Among them was a group of vagabonds called Wujiguntu(無籍棍徒), which was suspected of robbery and violation. Joseon court was anxious about the present of vagabonds, and they decided to request the government of Liaodong(遼東) to withdraw the officers including Hu. Their activities can be compared to that of vagabonds and officers who were later in collusion with eunuchs dispatched to every province of Ming China to collect various taxes.
