초록
This paper investigates whether a class of pronouns distinct from strong pronouns exists in Germanic languages like Romance languages that have morphologically distinct series of pronouns. We have individuated that German and English also have clitic-like pronouns. In German, it is noted that a pronoun such as es 'it' displays clitic-like behavior and [-human] pronoun can only occur in a particular clause-internal position. And we have shown that the properties which distinguish the pronouns in pre- and post-particle position in English are exactly the same as those that distinguish atonic pronouns from tonic pronouns in Romance languages. Finally, we have examined different types of topic elements in English and Italian. It is noted that strong(focal) pronoun and weak(topical) pronoun in English correspond to tonic pronoun and atonic pronoun in Italian respectively.
