연구 목적: 이 연구의 목적은 1880년 Arthur Moule이 편찬한 『Chinese stories for boys and girls』와 동시대 출간된 중국 이야기류 저서에 나타난 19세기 서양인에 중국 문화에 대한 인식과 그 편찬 의도를 규명하는 데 있다. 연구 방법: 『Chinese stories for boys and girls』와 ‘China(Chinese) story’, ‘China(Chinese) Tales’ 표제 저서의 체제와 내용을 분석하였다. 연구 내용: 중국 이야기 서적의 내용 분석을 통해 편찬 목적을 규명하고, 특히 선교사에 의해 편찬된 저서의 특징에 대하여 고찰하였다. 결론 및 제언: 19세기 중국 이야기는 저자의 ‘체험담’을 수록하여 서양인들에게 미지의 중국에 대한 지식을 제공하였다. 특히 『Chinese stories』에 실린 중국 문화와 효와 우애에 관한 고사는 ‘선교’라는 주제를 자연스럽게 전달하기 위한 장치로서 역할을 하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify awareness of chinese culture in China stories for boys and girls (1880) and china story books. The system and contents of the titles of ‘China (Chinese) story’, and ‘China (Chinese) Tales’ were analyzed. The purpose of compilation was identified through content analysis of Chinese stories books, and books compiled by missionaries were examined in terms of content. In this book author included experience stories in various aspects of China, providing Westerners with knowledge of unknown China. The examination of filial piety and friendship, which is also emphasized in Chinese culture and Christianity, served as a device to naturally convey the theme of “Mission in China”, the author’s core theme.
