초록

Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a promising cancer-treatment strategy that involves the induction of nuclear fission reactions via the interaction of low-energy thermal neutrons with boron (10B), enabling selective tumor-cell apoptosis. For BNCT to be effective, achieving a high degree of localization of 10B atoms within the tumor cells is crucial. Currently, the clinical use of the two U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drugs for BNCT, sodium mercaptoundecahydro-closo-dodecaborate (BSH) and boronophenylalanine (BPA), is restricted by their low uptake and low tumor-to-blood selectivity. Ongoing efforts are focused on developing high-uptake boron delivery agents with pharmacokinetic characteristics that enable high-efficiency BNCT. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent developments in boron delivery strategies for BNCT.
