Abstract

This study examines the differences in university students' higher-order learning experiences based on institutional and individual characteristics. It also explores the impact of various learning experiences on educational satisfaction and learning outcomes, with a particular focus on the mediating effect of higher-order learning. For this purpose, the study utilized three years of data (2021–2023) from the National Assessment of Student Engagement in Learning (NASEL) conducted by the Korean Educational Development Institute. Differences in higher-order learning experiences were analyzed using t-tests and ANOVA. Additionally, structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the relationships among collaborative learning, higher-order learning, active learning, faculty-student interaction, educational satisfaction, and learning outcomes. The study also examined the mediating role of higher-order learning by analyzing its direct, indirect, and total effects in these relationships. The key findings of the study are as follows: First, students' higher-order learning increased over time. Second, university size significantly influenced students' higher-order learning experiences, while gender, academic year, and academic disciplines also showed statistically significant differences. Regarding the impact of various learning experiences on educational satisfaction and learning outcomes, the results revealed: First, collaborative learning and active learning positively influenced students' engagement in higher-order learning, whereas faculty-student interaction had a negative effect. Second, the impact of these variables on educational satisfaction and learning outcomes differed across years depending on the characteristics of each variable. Third, when higher-order learning was set as a mediating variable in the relationship between collaborative learning, active learning, faculty-student interaction, and educational satisfaction and learning outcomes, the mediating effects were statistically significant across all three years. Building upon these findings, this study delineates academic and policy implications and proposes directions for future research.
