지속가능발전은 환경 위기를 극복하기 위한 전략으로 논의되고 있으며 교육과정 등에는 녹색 성장이 경제 성장 실천 전략으로 제시되고 있다. 이들의 효율적인 실행을 위해서는 교육을 통한 생활양식의 변화가 이뤄져야 하는데 이러한 변화를 유발하는데 중요한 역할을 하는 것이 바로 체험 교육이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 영국의 에덴 프로젝트의 특성과 특징적인 전시물들을 소개하였다. 에덴 프로젝트는 고령토의 폐광산 부지를 이용하여 열대 우림 및 지중해성 기후대에 속하는 식물을 전시하는 체험 교육 시설이다. 이 시설은 낙후된 지역의 경제 발전에 상당한 기여를 하였음은 물론 시설의 입지 자체가 지속가능한 발전을 지향하는 사례로 볼 수 있다. 에덴 프로젝트의 운영은 로컬 푸드 체계의 활용과 같은 지역과의 연계를 강조하고 있다. 전시 식물들을 설명하는 데 있어서도 인간과 자연과의 관계를 중심으로 하며, 특히 사회 경제적인 맥락에 강조점을 두고 있다. 또한 열대 우림 지역에서 생산되는 작물들을 소개하면서 작물 재배가 확대되는 과정의 사회적·생태적인 의미를 제시하며 공정 무역의 중요성을 강조하고 있다. 시설의 운영에 있어서도 신재생 에너지의 활용, 빗물 및 지하수의 활용 등 자원의 순환을 적극적으로 체험하도록 하고 있다. 이러한 측면들은 시설 그 자체 보다는 운영과 교육에 있어서 스토리텔링과 같은 소프트웨어적인 측면을 강조한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그리고 이는 우리나라의 유사 시설 설치에 있어서도 하드웨어적인 시설뿐만 아니라 운영 등에서의 소프트웨어적인 고려의 필요성을 제기하고 있다.
Abstract
Sustainable development strategies and green growth strategy have been emphasized to overcome the environmental crisis. To archive the goal of these strategies, educate the stake-holders or the general public is the critical part. The facilities and displays in the Eden Project in St. Austell, Cornwall, England, U.K are introduced and analysed in this study. The Eden Project is the experience facility showing various vegetation from tropical rain forest and mediterranean area. The facility was built the site where kaolinite was excavated and it has been regarded as good case for the sustainable use of abandoned open mines. The facility provides economic benefits to local area not only by attracting tourists to the site but also by constructing a local food supply chain. The Eden project display the tropical rain forest with detailed explanation based on the human-nature relationship with socioeconomic context, rather than botanical knowledge. The tropical fruits and crops like banana, palm, sugarcane and coffee are displayed with explanation of the social and ecological impact of large scale plantation. The role of fair trade as an alternative way of trade also emphasized to the visitors. The public display of the use of renewable energy sources and recycling of the groundwater and rainwater are part of experience program. In the case of the Eden Project, the programs, like story telling by volunteers and public lectures, have been focused in the operation rather than the facility itself. It should be considered by the Korean government or general public, when they construct and operate the new experience-based facility.
