Abstract

In fact, the main theme of Four Quartets is simple. That is the relation between man and God. Nonetheless, it is not so easy for us to catch all the meanings in Four Quartets. One of the reasons is that Eliot defines time much abstractly and differently from that of ours. He describes time on the basis of a Christian view, not a physical one. The former is based on humans’ mind, but the latter being on calculations produced by physical criterion. God transcends all kinds of time. The problem is that humans ignore this principle and stick to their own ways. But humans forget that God gives time to humans and controls all things of the universe including human thoughts as well as time. So Eliot demands that humans accord their time with that of God. It could lead humans to a salvation, to say nothing of freeing from time. Eliot demonstrates it through Four Quartets very properly.
