엘리엇의 『네 사중주』는 시간과 영원을 중심 주제로 다루고 있다. 이러한 주제는 인간이 현상의 삶을 살아가는 와중에 접하게 되는 일반적이고 보편적인 사항이지만 막상 그 의미를 정의하기는 매우 어려운 문제이다. 엘리엇은 『네 사중주』에서 구속과 고통이 있는 시간 속에 살아가는 인간의 삶과, 자유와 행복이 있는 영원한 삶을 대비적으로 나타내지만, 궁극적으로는 두 극단을 하나로 일치시키면서 시간 속에서 영원을 발견하는 지혜를 가리킨다. 이러한 지혜는 시간과 영원의 의미를 이해하는 것이며, 시인은 “정점,” “한겨울의 봄,” “영의 여름”이라는 시적 객관적 상관물과 상징을 고안하여 그 의미를 함축시킨다. 시인의 궁극적 지혜의 가르침은 모든 다양성이 하나로 통합되는 원리를 찾는 것이며, 그것은 영원과 시간의 상징인 불과 장미가 하나로 합쳐져 영광의 불 매듭이 되는 것이다.
Abstract
Eliot expressed time and eternity as a main topic in Four Quartets. This kind of subject is a general and universal issue that people come across in the life of phenomenon, but a very difficult to define its meaning. Eliot attempts to represent human life in the time of bondage and suffering, and the eternal life of freedom and happiness in Four Quartets, but ultimately the wisdom of finding eternity in time is to unite the two extremes. This wisdom comes from understanding the meaning of time and eternity. Then the poet devises and implies “still point,” “midwinter spring,” and “zero summer” as an objective correlative. Eliot’s ultimate teaching of wisdom is to find a principle in which all diversity is united, and to understand a symbolic meaning of the crown knot which is showing the fire and the rose are one.
