Abstract

Given that many middle-aged men experience psychological difficulties due to various stress but often do not seek professional help, this study explored which counseling methods are appropriate for them (directive counseling vs. non-directive counseling). In this study, directive counseling was defined as a counseling method in which the counselor sets the direction of the counseling and provides specific information or advice for problem-solving, whereas non-directive counseling was defined as a counseling method that provides a supportive environment through unconditional positive regard, empathy, and acceptance and helps the client find solution to his/her problems. A total of 250 middle-aged men were asked to read scripts of mock directive and non-directive counseling sessions, after which their satisfaction with the two counseling methods were measured. In addition it was examined how gender role conflict and individualism-collectivism orientation affect their satisfaction. The results showed that middle-aged men had higher satisfaction with directive counseling than with non-directive counseling. Furthermore, the higher the gender role conflict and vertical collectivism, the higher the satisfaction with directive counseling, while the higher the horizontal collectivism, the higher the satisfaction with non-directive counseling. Based on these findings, the significance, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research were discussed.
