Abstract
Choi Hyeong-han (?-1504) was a prominent figure during the reign of King Yeonsan. After passing the civil service examination, he primar ily served in the Office of Inspector General while also holding local ad ministrative positions in Okgwa, Yeonggwang, and Yeong-am, where he was known for his benevolent governance and efforts to promote schol arly culture. His career aligns with the reformist agenda of the Sarim, which emerged as a significant social force during this period. The Sarim exerted influence by controlling the discourse in the central gov ernment, thereby checking the power of the king and the ruling elite, while also applying Confucian values to their local governance and fo cusing on the moral education of the populace. Choi's conduct as a lo cal official reflected the values and activities of the Sarim. Notably, dur ing the Gapja Incident (1504), he protested against the injustices of the event and ultimately chose to take his own life. As the magistrate of Okgwa, he earned the respect of local residents, who revered him and established a memorial tablet in his honor at Yu-ae sa Shrine (遺愛祠). However, following the enshrinement of Kim In-hu at Yeonggwi sa Shrine, who also served as the magistrate of Okgwa, Choi was eventually excluded from the memorial rites. However, as the Yu-ae sa Shrine transformed into a seowon (Confucian academy), cen tered around the gentry of Gwangju, which was the hometown of Choi Hyeong-han, support from the gentry of Neungju and Hwasun was add ed, and efforts were made to enshrine Choi Hyeong-han in the shrine of Yeonggwi seowon. Ultimately, with the backing of Seonggyungwan scholars, these efforts culminated in a successful tribute during the reign of King Jeongjo. However, this led to complications regarding the hier archy of the memorial tablets. Given that Choi Hyeong-han was a senior figure compared to Kim In-hu and had held higher official positions, Choi’s tablet was expected to occupy a more prestigious place. Nonetheless, with Kim In-hu being enshrined in the Munmyo Confucian Shrine in 1796 (20th year of King Jeongjo's reign), a shift in the hier archy occurred. This situation reflected the influence of consciousness of the transmission of the Way on the hierarchy of memorial tablets. Ultimately, no consensus was reached on the placement of the tablets for Choi Hyeong-han and Kim In-hu, leading to Choi's tablet being re located to Jisan-dong in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do Province where the Jisan Shrine was established in front of the ancestral graves of the Gyeongju Choi clan.
