Abstract
When actors study lines, the foremost consideration is a clear understanding of the interaction be tween pronunciation accuracy and emotional expression. Effective audience engagement and emo tional delivery require a precise comprehension of the text and sufficient vocal clarity. While actors may enhance their speech skills through techniques such as tongue movement exercises, repetitive reading, voice and breath training, and recording-based feedback, these methods often rely heavily on the auditory judgment of instructors or the subjective perception of the individual. As a practical alternative to overcome these limitations, this study examines the effectiveness of tongue control training based on Estill Voice Training (EVT). EVT is a voice training model grounded in anatomical and physiological principles, designed to segment the functions of the articulatory system and facili tate integrated training of the vocal mechanism. In EVT, vowel articulation is categorized by high, mid, low, and compressed tongue positions, while consonant articulation is classified—following Korean phonetic standards—into bilabial, alveolar, palatal, velar, and glottal sounds. These tongue positions play a critical role in achieving articulatory precision and in the fine-tuned control of reso nance, thereby contributing to both speech clarity and nuanced emotional expression. By integrating voice analysis tools with proprioceptive training, learners can enhance their ability to perceive and control articulatory processes both visually and kinesthetically. This study aims to analyze the impact of EVT-based training on improving actors’ pronunciation and to propose practical strategies for fa cilitating emotionally effective speech performance without technical hindrances.
