공공신학의 ‘탈사사화 테제’ 비판-탈세속화 시대에 다시 보는 종교의 사사화의 공공성

초록

공공신학은 교회와 신학이 개인의 내면적 신앙이나 사적인 윤리, 혹은 교회 공동체 내부의 종교적인 문제들에만 집중하는 현실을 비판하면서, 정치, 경제, 학문 등 다양한 공적인 영역을 기독교 신앙에 기초하여 변혁시킬 것을 지향한다. 이런 점에서 교회와 신학의 ‘사사화’(Privatisierung/privatization)에 대한 비판과 극복은 공공신학의 출발점이자 최종지점이라고 할 수 있다. 이를 본 연구에서는 공공신학의 ‘탈사사화 테제’(Entprivatisierungsthese/deprivatization-thesis)라고 개념화한다. 공공신학의 동기와 기여에 대해서 충분히 공감하고 긍정할 수 있지만 종교의 사사화에 대한 공공신학의 비판이 과연 자유민주주의 이념과 더불어 근대 세속국가가 생성되던 당시의 상황과 의미에 대한 엄밀한 분석에 토대하고 있는지는 의심스러운 면이 있는 것도 사실이다. 본 연구에서는 종교의 사사화 현상을 세속국가의 종교적 중립성이라는 맥락 안에서 살펴봄으로써 종교의 사사화 그 자체가 공공성을 지니고 있음을 밝힘으로써 공공신학의 탈사사화 테제의 일방성을 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해서는 세속국가 형성과정을 규정했던 법률들과 그 법철학적 의의들에 주목한다. 이로써 탈세속화 시대에 공공신학의 주요 과제는 단순히 교회와 신학의 공공성을 강조하는 것이 아니라, 구체적으로 자유민주주의 정치체제와의 긴밀한 협력과 대화가 필요하다는 것이 제시될 것이다.

Abstract

Public theology calls for the transformation of public spheres such as politics, economy, and academic world as it criticizes the reality of theology and church that they have long focused merely on private faith, individual ethics or religious issues within church communities. In this sense, criticism to and overcoming of the ‘privatization’ of theology can be clarified as alpha and omega of public theology. The main theme of public theology will, in this paper, be conceptualized as ‘deprivatization-thesis’(Entprivatizierungsthese) of public theology. Although motives and contributions of public theology might experience much empathies and affirmations, its criticism on the privatization of religion lacks of elaborated analysis about the juridical meaning of religious neutrality of secular state which was founded in accordance with the political idea of liberal democracy during the period of modern secularization. This paper aims to expose the one-sidedness of deprivatization-thesis of public theology and to show the publicity of privatization of theology in contemporary context of post-secular age.
