Abstract

The purpose of this study is to elucidate biomechanical characteristics of gait by comparing lower extremity muscle power, at a stance phase, of normal people with those of obese people according to different walking speeds. These experimental subjects, all males aged 20 to 30 years, were classified into 2 groups by Body Mass Index(BMI) : one group was 8 males with normal body weight who were experimented at a standard speed of 1.5m/s and the other group is 8 obese ones at two different walking speeds (standard speed of 1.5m/s and self-selected speed of 1.3m/s). We calculated muscle powers of lower extremity during a stance phase through video recording and platform force measuring. One-way MANOVA(RM) within the obese group at two different walking speeds and One-way MANOVA(RG) in the normal and obese groups at a standard walking speed, were applied to get the difference of muscle powers. In conclusion, when obese people walked at a standard speed, both production and absorption of muscle powers of ankle and knee in obese people were of bigger than ones in the normal people and those values are statistically significant. However significant muscle power of hip was achieved only in case of absorption.
