Abstract
This study examines the music of Josef Bayer’s ballet Die Braut von Korea (The Bride of Korea), premiered at the Vienna K.K. Hofoper in 1897, to explore how Asia was musically represented in late 19th-century Viennese ballet. The research is based on the scores published by Schott Music in 2020, Bayer’s autograph manuscripts, and contemporary newspaper reviews. The analysis reveals that Bayer employed Dorian and pentatonic melodies, chromatic harmonic progressions, contrasting timbres of woodblocks and metallic percussion, and tempo and dynamic modulations in the national dances of Siam, Japan, and Java. However, structurally, these dances remained within the formal framework of Viennese waltz and polka, maintaining 2/4 or 3/4 meter and A-B-A form. Notably, despite the work’s title referencing Korea, no music is explicitly labeled as “Korean dance.” Korea functioned as a neutral background upon which other Asian cultures were projected. Contemporary critics criticized the music’s lack of “characteristic color,” yet the work achieved commercial success with 38 performances. This demonstrates that the function of 19th-century ballet music lay not in ethnomusicological accuracy but in accompanying dance and creating dramatic atmosphere, revealing music’s subordinate position to visual elements.
