Abstract

In general, shame as a source of moral emotions has been found to be consistently linked to poor interpersonal skills, impaired empathy, anger, hostility, and psychological maladjustment to anger management. But would guilt as another source of moral emotion be as psychologically maladaptive as shame? Contrary to general expectations, research results have reported that guilt is not associated with psychological maladjustment. Until now, much emphasis has been placed on guilt in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Also, in many self-help books, guilt has been an emotion that must be avoided. However, numerous research results show that common assumptions about guilt are incorrect. Guilt is consistently linked to social competence rather than incompetence, strengthening other-oriented empathy, and constructive strategies for anger management. In fact, guilt performs appropriate functions at interpersonal and social levels, at considerable expense to the individual's psychological well-being. Why do these research results present themselves? The purpose of this study is to provide an answer to this question. Much literature on the identity and difference between shame and guilt as moral emotions present us with various types of questions. This is because the concepts of shame and guilt are not clearly defined. Therefore, in this study, I would like to examine how the definitions of the core concepts of shame and guilt in psychoanalysis and psychopathology theory were historically formed in relation to the concept of self. Psychoanalysts working from various theoretical perspectives have discussed the impact of shame and guilt on the formation of psychological maladjustment. As it turns out, the answer depends in part on how you define shame and guilt. A careful review of the empirical literature reveals that, following H. B. Lewis's self vs. behavior distinction, guilt is not rated as such a negative emotion after all. Nevertheless, the possibility that "maladaptive" guilt exists cannot be ruled out. In this paper, I first intend to historically examine psychoanalytic theories related to the emergence and separation of the concepts of shame and guilt. Next, I would like to examine whether guilt can empirically cause psychopathological phenomena.
