Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aquatic training on standing balance and walking in stroke patients using Halliwick method. The subject were 22 stroke patients who elapsed 6 month after stoke and have the weak possibility of natural recovery. The 22 subjects were randomly assigned into experimental group (n=12) and control group(n=10). The experimental group was asked to participate in aquatic training(3 times/week) and conventional training(2 times/week) composed weight bearing training, R.O.M exercise, bicycle exercise, for 8 weeks. The control group was only asked to participate in conventional training(5 times/week) for 8 weeks. The subjects were tested by time, distance variable of the dynamic balance(DB), X axis, Y axis speed variable of the static balance(SB), functional reach test (FRT), 10m walk speed(10m WS). Collected data were statistically analyzed by SPSS Ver. 12.0 using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, student t-test. The results of the experiment were as follows. In the DB, SB, FRT, 10m walk speed, the experimental group showed a statistical significance between pre and post test(p<.05). In the time, FRT, the control group showed a statistical significance between pre and post test(p<.05). In the distance, Y axis speed, 10m waliking speed, there was a statistical significance between the experimental group and the control group(p<.05). As a result, the group participating in a aquatic training had a more functional improvement than the control group. Therefore, the aquatic training may be used to improving balance, locomotion function in chronic stroke patients.
