Abstract
Aquatic rehabilitation exercise is a new promising therapy in gait rehabilitation of disabled with Cerebrovascular accident(CVA). The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of aquatic rehabilitation exercise on maximal walking speed, gait endurance, and balance in hemiplegic male disabled after stroke. The subjects of this study were aquatic rehabilitation exercise group(n=17, 53.59±10.05years) and comparison group(n=15, 59.07±6.43years). The aquatic exercise program was performed two times per week, sixty minutes per session for twelve weeks. All groups were evaluated at before and after 12-week program. For data analysis, a Two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used. As a result, aquatic rehabilitation exercise group was better than comparison group on maximal gait speed(p<.05), gait endurance(p<.05), and kinetic balance ability(p<.05). Performing aquatic rehabilitation resulted in improved balance and gait ability, and as a consequence the subjects functional capacity was enhanced. However, the activities in his daily living may necessary in order to maintain the effects. Therefore, These results demonstrate that CVA disabled are able to improve their maximal walking capacity, gait endurance from aquatic rehabilitation exercise.
