Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the reporting behavior of elderly crime victims. Previous studies on elderly victimization have primarily focused on the vulnerability of older adults, analyzing victimization rates and types, while rarely addressing victims’ responses or reporting decisions. Recognizing the importance of victim reporting behavior and its determinants, this study examined reporting rates and influencing factors among elderly property crime victims. Data were drawn from a crime victimization survey targeting the elderly conducted by Kim et al. (2024). Among 5,521 respondents aged 65 and older, responses from 710 individuals who experienced property victimization were analyzed. The reporting rate among elderly property crime victims was very low at 21.8%, with police and related agencies, as well as family and relatives, identified as the primary recipients of reports. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine factors influencing reporting decisions, with gender comparisons revealing distinct patterns. Elderly women tended to rely more on informal support networks and were influenced by emotional factors such as depression and trust in police, whereas elderly men based their reporting decisions primarily on incident characteristics such as actual harm occurrence. Additionally, depression emerged as a significant barrier to reporting among elderly women, demonstrating that reporting decision structures differ by gender. These findings underscore the need for tailored support policies that reflect gender-specific characteristics and psychosocial factors.
