뉴에이지(New Age)의 ‘우주적 그리스도’(Cosmic Christ) 개념과 전망에 대한 비판적 고찰- 교의신학적 관점에서 -

초록

오늘날 그리스도교는 뉴에이지 운동의 도전에 직면해 있다. 특히 그 ‘우주적 그리스도’에 관한 개념과 전망은 그리스도교 신앙에 대한 위협적 요소로 다가오고 있다. 이에 따르면, 그리스도는 하나의 역사적 인물로 제한할 수 없는 보편적 정신이며 이상이다. 이러한 우주적 그리스도는 역사 안에서 여러 뛰어난 인물들로 발현되었는데, 나자렛 예수는 그들 중 하나일 뿐이다. 뉴이지에서는 이러한 우주적 그리스도가 모든 인간 안에서 발견되는 내적 원리에 해당된다고 규정한다. 이 ‘내적 그리스도’는 더욱 계발되고 성장되어 조명의 상태에 이르러야 할 인간 내부의 신성한 불꽃이라고 간주된다. 나자렛 예수란 이러한 내적 불꽃의 충만한 실현을 통해서 우주적 정신의 발현을 탁월하게 보여준 인물 중 하나에 해당된다고 한다. 역사적 예수에 대한 이러한 평가는 신영지주의 계열의 이른바 ‘새 복음서들’을 통해 전해지는 밀교적 전설에 기초한 것이다. 그리고 뉴에이지의 우주적 그리스도론은 도래할 ‘우주적 스승’으로서의 미래 그리스도에 대해서도 언급한다. 이러한 뉴에이지적 그리스도론은 크게 세 가지 점에서 그리스도교 신앙에 대한 위협을 구성한다. 첫째, 역사적 예수의 십자가 사건, 즉 그 수난과 죽음의 구원론적 의미와 가치가 거부되거나 경시된다. 둘째, 역사의 예수와 신앙의 그리스도 사이의 필연적 연속성과 동일성이 부정된다. 셋째, 구원 역사에서 드러나는 예수 그리스도의 유일성과 보편성이 거부된다. 현대의 그리스도교 종교신학적 흐름은 뉴에이지의 바로 이러한 세 가지 점으로부터 분명한 거리를 유지해야만 한다. 오늘날의 신학자들에게는 뉴에이지 추종자들의 그릇된 염원을 예수 그리스도 안에서의 참된 자유와 구원의 길에로 인도해야 할 예언자적 소명이 부여되어 있다.

Abstract

Today the Christianity has to face the challenges of the 'New Age' movement. Especially, the concept of 'Cosmic Christ' and its perspective constitute a dangerous element to the Christian Faith. According to the New Age, Christ cannot be defined as a historical person. It is rather a universal spirit or ideal. This cosmic Christ have manifested himself as several brilliant figures in the human history, including Jesus of Naza- reth. The New Age considers the cosmic Christ an inner principle which can be found in each person. This 'inner Christ' as a divine flame should be developed inside each person until the moment of illumination. Jesus of Nazareth is one of the persons who have extra- ordinarily shown the manifestation of the cosmic spirit through the full realization of this inner flame. This explanation on the historical Jesus is based on the esoteric legends from the so-called 'new gospels' of the new Gnostic tradition. This cosmic Christology of the New Age also presents the future Christ as the 'universal teacher' to come. The cos- mic Christology of the New Age constitutes the three dangerous points to the Christian Faith. First, this Christology neglects the soteriological meaning and value of the Cross event, namely, the Passion and death of the historical Jesus. Second, this Christology denies the necessary continuity and identity between the historical Jesus and the Christ of faith. Third, this Christology negates the uniqueness and universality of Jesus Christ in the history of salvation. The modern stream of the Chri- stian theology of religions should keep the distance from these three dangerous points of the New Age Christology. The theologians of today has a prophetic mission to conduct the false hope of the New Age followers to the way of true freedom and salvation in Jesus Christ.
