이 글은 한국 개신교 역사에서 거의 인지하지 못하고 심지어 왜곡된 기억 속에 존재하는 헤론 부인이자 게일 부인이었던 해리엇 깁슨의 선교사로서의 삶을 재조명하고 있다. 헤론 부인은 재혼으로 인해 게일 부인이 되었고 그의 이름은 미국에서는 해외선교에 깊은 관심을 가진 깁슨 가문의 딸, 해리엇 깁슨으로 더 잘 알려져 있었다. 그는 미 북장로교가 한국선교를 위해 처음으로 임명한 헤론 의사와 결혼해서 한국에 파송되었다. 헤론 부인은 초기 선교부 내에서의 개인적 불화와 출산과 육아에 따른 여러 가지 질병 등 어려움에도 불구하고 한국여성들을 위한 사역을 개시했으며 안방에서 여성들을 이끌어 내어 그들이 가진 어머니, 여성, 교사로서의 힘을 발견하게 했다. 헤론 부인은 남편의 제중원 의사라는 공적 지위를 이용하여 효과적으로 한국여성들과 접촉했으며 남편의 죽음 이후에도 계속해서 사역을 이어나갔다. 헤론 부인이 이루어낸 여성사역에 대한 성과로 인해 선교부는 여성사역의 가능성과 가치를 알아보게 되었다. 헤론부인은 한국인 여성들을 성경을 통해 교육하는 여러 거점들을 세웠으며 뒤이어 오는 여선교사들이 함께 활동할 수 있는 한국인 여성사역자들, 전도부인을 양성했다. 그가 닦아놓은 기초 위에서 장로교의 여성사역은 더욱 발전하게 된다. 게일과의 결혼으로 원산으로 이주한 이후에도 게일 부인으로서 원산의 여성사역을 개척하였다. 초기 개척선교사로서 헤론 부인과 게일 부인으로 살았던 해리엇은 여성에 대한 편견과 제약들을 극복하고 자신이 사용할 수 있는전략과 계획을 통해 한국 여성들을 교회로 이끈 대표적인 부인선교사였다.
Abstract
This is about a missionary wife who has been barely recognized and unfairly remembered, considering what she accomplished in those early days of the Presbyterian mission in Korea. She had a little confusing identity for she had been once Mrs. Heron and later called Mrs. Gale. Her maiden name was Harriet Elizabeth Gibson, who were raised in milieu of the 19th century American missionary movement. She accompanied Dr. Heron who was the first appointee for mission in Korea. Soon after their marriage the couple departed for Korea. In spite of the early difficulties like personal conflicts in the missionary community and her severe illness, she tirelessly tried and carried out her missionary work for women. Finally she drew out some Korean women from their inner rooms and made them realize their power as a mother, woman and teacher. She used her status, wife of king’s doctor for this purpose and contacted many Korean women to make them pay attention to the gospel. Her ministry with Korean women continued even after Dr. Heron’s death. In fact, it was so successful that missionaries recognized the value of work for women. She started several classes for women, established teaching stations which later became local churches, and raised Bible women, native women workers. On these foundation woman’s work for woman in Seoul had flourished. Her second marriage to Mr. Gale led her to a new frontier, Wonsan, where she again sowed a seed for church. She was true to her calling as a missionary wife, which was in a line of lay volunteer movement of the 19th century.
