Abstract

This study critically examines the long-standing academic interpretation that the Jindo Ship (珍島船), excavated in 1991 and 1992 from the Beokpajin waterway in Gogun-myeon, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, was a “Chinese dugout canoe.” The primary objective of this research is to demonstrate, based on measured drawings of the excavated hull fragments, excavation reports, direct artifact examination, and archaeological evidence from China and Japan, that the Jindo Ship was not a dugout canoe but rather a constructed vessel (構造 船). The Jindo Ship has traditionally been regarded as a Chinese vessel because of several features identified during the excavation: Yuan dynasty coins, the presence of bulkheads and beam seats, the use of iron nails, the application of tung oil putty (桐油灰), the existence of bosugong (保壽孔)— a feature associated with Fujian shipbuilding practices— and the use of camphor wood. These factors collectively reinforced the interpretation of the Jindo Ship as a Chinese craft, which became the prevailing view in academic circles for decades. However, this study argues that despite these factors, the Jindo Ship possessed the essential structural elements of a constructed vessel, and therefore, the long-accepted classification as a “dugout canoe” must be reexamined. To verify this, the research conducted a comparative analysis of contemporaneous archaeological ship remains from China and Japan, demonstrating that the Jindo Ship was a composite constructed vessel rather than a simple dugout. Furthermore, by analyzing the measured drawings and surviving hull fragments, the study virtually reconstructed the damaged and missing parts using CAD-based modeling and conducted a 1:5 scale model experiment to test the functional roles of each structural component. Through these analyses, this study reinterprets the national and technological character of the Jindo Ship and reevaluates its significance within the broader context of East Asian shipbuilding traditions.
