Abstract
For centuries sarīra have been the subject of worship of offerings. Sarīra worship was based on the pretext that it can, on a large-scale,with grandeur, provide good fortune to individuals and communities. It is realized at a cosmic and existential level. It has been written inthe scriptures that the sarira means “the entirety of the physical bodyincluding the living and dead body.” However, according to the Mahāparinibbāna-suttanta, the process of making offerings to the sarīra ofBuddha, in the context of Buddhism, refers to the remains of Buddha. Stūpa signifies nirvana. Stūpa refers to the enshrinement of theremains of the Buddha and the hemisphere of bricks and stones on topof it. While living beings can be the subject of worship and offerings, the establishment of the Stūpa only takes its place once these beingshave departed this world. The history of worship and offerings hasreceived attention because of the Buddha and since nirvana the remainshave become a symbolic structure. Stūpa allows one to transcend theworld of the body and senses and allows the people to feel closer. Thehumble reverence of Stūpa and sarīra is proper and leads to a strongsense of community. Although the appearance of statues of the Buddhaare the result of the desire of the masses to secularize a transcendentbeing, the appearance of these statues are an important part of theeffort to popularize a world of understanding. The nirvana of the Buddha leaves room for interpretation as thebeginning of a new community, yet the situations end with a focus on the worship of and offerings to sarīra. Offerings to sarīra signify afocus towards the future and an incontrovertibly deep spiritualinspiration. The reason why sarīra worship is deeply rooted in itsorigins is because the nirvana of the Buddha was a celebration of theentire community, and the sarīra of the Buddha contributed to thespread of this sense of community.
