A Study of Women Culture as Described in Trial Narratives in the Edo Period: Focusing on Maids

This study exposes the lives of women maids during Japan's Edo period. In particular this study examines the works of Ihara Saikaku and the trial narratives of Honcho Ouin Hizi discourse on women maids. In Saikaku's works, wealthy male owners consider maids as objects of lust and as untrustworthy people. In the trial narratives, wealthy male owners also use maids as objects of lust without any moral concern. In 『Ouoka Sidan』 two types of maids are described: the maid who overcame her circumstances, and the maid who preferred wealth to morality. This could be interpreted that the relationship between master and servant transformed during 18th century Japan. It also means that accumulating wealth was preferred to upholding morality. Thus, Japanese recognize maids not only as women who work for a living, but also women who provide sex for men as a means of living.
