Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to review the distinctive features used in urban regeneration, such as compact redevelopment of brown-field areas, public-private partnership, and flagship development, that have started from the early 1960s in the US city of Baltimore and Glasgow soon followed, and afterwards became widespread throughout Europe and even many cities in the world. The urban regeneration particularly aims to restructure urban space by redeveloping depressed brown-field areas, instead of spreading urban space that has been used for urban development and growth. However, the urban regeneration has certain limitations; especially it may not recover the overall side effects that have been caused by the previous process of urban development. As the urban regeneration focuses on the concentration of developing central city areas, it has led to growth polarization within the cities. Therefore, the study attempts to review and evaluate the effects of Baltimore and Glasgow's urban regeneration strategies.
